Open Door Program

Special Services for Highly Capable Students

The purpose of the Prosser School District Open Door Program is to provide services for the unique needs of highly capable students in grades 3-8. 

The term highly capable students generally refers to the top 3% of students and unique needs refers to these learning characteristics:

(1) Capacity to learn with unusual depth of understanding, to retain what has been learned, and to

transfer learning to new situations;

(2) Capacity and willingness to deal with increasing levels of abstraction and complexity earlier than

their chronological peers;

(3) Ability to make unusual connections among ideas and concepts;

(4) Ability to learn very quickly in their area(s) of intellectual strength;

(5) Capacity for intense concentration and/or focus.

Class Description for 8th Grade Honors History and 6th-7th Grade Open Door

 

  •        Individual learning plans will be recorded for each student that are based on the multiple intelligences.   An emphasis will be placed on developing skills that are at the top of Blooms Taxonomy:  Analysis and synthesis of information and materials, application of knowledge and learning, and evaluation of results will be used in various class projects.   Curriculum for the Open Door program will seek to help students develop a positive self esteem through unique intellectual challenges that extend beyond the traditional classroom.  All units will use project based learning which fosters individual creativity, risk taking, problem solving, and critical higher level thinking skills. Unit of study include computer science, historical research, economics, local and federal civics, and literature.
